Ear cushions are the part that gives up first: foam collapses, faux leather cracks, and then attenuation leaks away because the cup no longer seals. That is measurable: a leaking seal easily costs you a few decibels.
Gel cushions seal better around a glasses arm than standard foam, which is noticeable if you wear shooting glasses. They also stay cooler on a warm day.
